RED SAND POCKET BEACH, MAUI

This little gem of a beach near Hana Bay (its Hawaiian name is Kaihalulu) is a delightful hidden place to visit if you are spending a couple of days in Hana during your visit to Maui. It is not a beach you would go to simply for a day at the beach. The swimming isn’t great (something like swimming in a washing machine), the snorkeling opportunities are nil, and access is awkward. Still, this striking beach is worth a look for the rainbow-colored lava cinders on the way, the electric blue waters outside the cove, the menacing-looking lava rock inside the bay, the ironwood trees, and, of course, the red sand.

To get there, park on Uakea near Hauoli. Be sure to park facing the correct direction or risk a parking ticket. Walk part-way across the large lawn area to a trail on the right leading downward. Take a right at the Japanese cemetery and watch out for slippery cinders. At the end of your five-minute walk, enjoy the untouched beauty of the Red Sand Beach.

If Matt LeBlanc (of Friends fame) Can, Why Not You?
So you’ve decided that you, too, want to be married in paradise on one of the gorgeous islands of Hawaii? The islands are a perfect backdrop for weddings, engagements, vow-renewals, and eloping. Here are a few location suggestions for that special moment:

1. In a quaint, historic church.
2. At sunset on any of the pristine beaches (a la Mr. LeBlanc).
3. Under azure waters, while scuba-diving.
4. In front of the crystal flowing waters of a picturesque waterfall.
5. In a lush, tropical garden.
6. At one of the luxury resorts.
7. On a private river boat cruise.
8. On a private estate.
9. On the turquoise Pacific in a chartered sailboat.
10. At the Coco Palms (Kauai), the scene of Elvis’ wedding in “Blue Hawaii.”

You can spend a little or you can drop a small fortune–either way, memories to last a lifetime will be made.

Dear Big Kahuna,

Is it true that there is trout and trout fishing season in Hawaii????
Mahalo,
Curious in California

Aloha Curious California,
Reportedly, there is trout fishing on Kauai in Kokee on the west side. Here’s the hook-line-and-sinker, quoted verbatim, from the State of Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources:

“Location: The Kokee Public Fishing Area includes certain streams, reservoirs and ditches in the Kokee State Park on Kauai.

Permitted: With a valid Freshwater Game Fishing License, to fish with one pole and line or one line using one baited hook attached to the single line, or possess any rainbow trout during the trout fishing season, beginning the first Saturday in August and continuing for a period of 16 consecutive days, then only on weekends and holidays for the remainder of August and September, unless suspended.

To use a dip net up to two feet in longest axis, excluding the handle, to land hooked trout. To take up to seven trout per licensee per day during the open season, provided that additional legally taken trout may be possessed under refrigeration. To fish between 5:30 am and 6:45 pm during the open season, provided that all fishermen report before and after fishing activities to designated checking stations.

Hawaii freshwater fishing licenses are available online at https://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dar/lic_permit.htm. The Freshwater Game Fishing License (FWGFL) is required if fishing for rainbow trout in the Kokee Public Fishing Area, Kauai.”

For a simpler alternative, visit On the Water and click on “On the Water.”

And when you get bored with fishing, there’s also seasonal plum picking and pig hunting!

Good luck!
Big Kahuna
