The Big Island’s largest valley (one mile wide, six miles long!) is as beautiful a place as you will ever visit. With unimaginably steep walls on all sides, waterfalls etching the perimeter, fields of taro and a luscious black sand beach, it never fails to impress. Waipio Valley, along the Hamakua Coast, was often chosen as the meeting place for chiefs when important decisions, such as the succession of the king, were made. The instant you arrive at the lookout above this awesome spectacle, you will realize why the valley was so special to the ancient Hawaiians. Access to the valley is down a ridiculously steep, one-lane road. The view from the valley floor with its numerous waterfalls is unforgettable. If you don’t have an SUV, you can get to the valley via a shuttle, a wagon tour, or trail rides.

Top 10 Tips to Avoiding Jetlag
Jetlag can cause travelers many problems, including fatigue, constipation, headache, irregular heartbeat, and nausea.

Here are our Top 10 Tips to Avoiding Jetlag:

1. Get plenty of sleep before you leave.

2. Eat well-balanced meals, avoid overeating, and don’t drink alcohol (it dehydrates your body). Favor fruit on the plane (it re-hydrates your body).

3. Set your watch to the local time of your destination as soon as you get on the plane.

4. Spend time outside or at least near a window during daylight hours in the new location. Natural light helps reset your body clock.

5. Adjust your bedtime and meal times to the new location as soon as possible.

6. Drink plenty of water during flight to avoid the dehydration caused by flying.

7. Melatonin, a widely-available over-the-counter supplement, helps some people re-adjust their photo-period to the new location without experiencing jetlag. For details, visit and consult your physician.

8. Exercise as much as you can on your trip, especially by doing fun stuff.

9. Do what the locals do and adopt their local food, dress, and customs as soon as you arrive.

10. Enjoy your vacation!

Dear Big Kahuna,

Why hasn’t the “infamous” Cocoa Palms Hotel been restored? “Blue Hawaii” with Elvis was filmed there and it has a well known reputation. I understand re-creations of the wedding for folks are still being held.

Aloha Richard,

Coco Palms on Kauai, opened in 1953 and was the world’s most famous Polynesian resort until hurricane Iniki struck the island on September 11, 1992 and damaged Coco Palms. After over a decade, the silly insurance issues are not resolved, so the resort remains officially closed with no announced plans to reopen. If the property owners fail to take some positive action soon, the State of Hawaii is investigating plans to buy the property. However, a private investor is seeking to acquire and re-open the property.

As you mentioned, Coco Palms was indeed the location of the famous outrigger canoe wedding scene in Elvis Presley’s “Blue Hawaii,” released in 1961. Weddings do still take place on the lagoon amid the over 2,000 coconut palm trees.

Brief, informal tours are still conducted by the understanding and old-timer security guard on the property. Groups still make pilgrimages to Coco Palms to have their photos taken in front of the little grass shack where Elvis stood.

Rumors have it that echoes of Elvis can be heard blowing through the palm tree leaves every Blue Moon. The next Blue Moon is July 31, 2004.

For a listing of the best places to stay closest to the Coco Palms, visit: “Elvis Lives”. Then click on the accommodation of your choice and the link for the towns named “Kapaa-Wailua.”

Happy Elvis Sightings!
