Oneloa Beach, Maui

This West Maui beach should not be confused with another one of the same name in South Maui. Despite the many resort dwellings behind this long, luxurious beach, it is surprisingly uncrowded most of the time. Its geography is deceptive. The public access deposits you on the eastern (right) third of it and you quickly conclude that this wide, sandy beach has bad swimming and snorkeling because of a lava bench in the nearshore waters, seemingly extending the whole length. Visitors often turn around and leave at this point. The left third of the beach usually has a padded sandy bottom, making the swimming delightful. Snorkeling around the left end is very good, with lots of fish and rock formations. (Snorkeling is dangerous when the surf is up.) The beach is best enjoyed in the early morning, when the wind and surf tend to be low.

Superstition?
Legend says that if you remove any lava from the island that bad luck will befall you. Balderdash! you say. Hey, we don’t know if it’s true or not. You don’t have to be a believer, but talk to any resort or local post office and they will tell you about boxes of lava that come in all the time from visitors who brought a souvenir of lava home only to have their house burn down, their foot fall off, or get audited by the IRS. Coincidence? Maybe. But if you decide to do it anyway, remember…you’ve been warned.

Editor’s Note:
For the legend behind this superstition, see the November 2000 issue of TNT

Dear Big Kahuna,

Dear Big Kahuna,

On our recent trip to Hawaii we were greeted at our hotel with lovely, fragrant leis. I know this is a tradition in Hawaii, but why? Just curious.
Denise, Los Angeles

Dear Curious Denise,

The custom of presenting a sweetly scented garland of tropical flowers is one of Hawaii’s most endearing expressions of aloha (love). The tradition apparently began when kings and queens ruled the islands. Royalty were greeted with lots of gifts, including flowing necklaces of flowers. The tradition has continued and has become a way of saying aloha to everyone, royalty or not. Lei-making has become quite an art form on the islands and the necklaces are made from incredibly fragrant plumeria blossoms, pikake (a type of jasmine), trailing vines, or rare and very expensive Niihau shells. Niihau leis can cost thousands of dollars, but the flower varieties range from $5 to $35.

To arrange a lei greeting upon your arrival, visit Kenui Aloha Lei Greeters by clicking here.

For information on Selecting and Keeping Your Hawaiian Lei, see the September 2001 issue of TNT.

Mahalo for writing, Denise. Come back and see us soon.

Aloha,
Big Kahuna
