Kailua Beach Park on Oahu¹s East Shore (450 Kawailoa Road) is your classically gorgeous Hawaiian beach, with long stretches of fine, white sand, graceful ironwood trees, clear, aqua water and little islands off in the distance. Lots of body surfing, swimming, surfing and wind-surfing goes on here. Wind-surfing equipment can be rented in nearby Kailua town.

This spot is often missed because it’s hidden on the other side of Waikiki, over the Ko’olau Mountain Range. There are three driving routes to discover Kailua Beach Park: The H3 Freeway, the Likelike Highway (Route 63), and/or the Pali Highway (Route 61). The H3 Freeway provides the highest drama as this new roadway floats on the side of the mountains, hovering and winding its way down to Kailua, providing an angel’s view of this heavenly destination.

The Hawaiian Lifeguard Association reports that you can find the following at Kailua Beach and its park areas: LIFEGUARDS, SAND, PICNIC AREAS, PHONES, SHOWERS, RESTROOMS. Since, in our opinion, no beach should be without sand, we are glad to learn of the lifeguards’ report.

With a protective coral reef providing safe swimming and consistent water temperatures of 75 degrees, Kailua Beach is, naturally, a popular spot. Kailua has recently been named as one of the best beaches in the world by various publications, so it won’t be ³hidden² for long. Still, due to its excellent and numerous beach attributes (including sand!), Kailua Beach Park should be included on any not-to-be-missed list.

What is a “rip current”? It is a narrow, powerful current of water running perpendicular to the beach, out into the ocean. These currents may extend 200 to 2,500 feet lengthwise, but are typically less than 30 feet wide. Rip currents can move fast, often 5 miles per hour or faster. Rip currents are caused by the shape of the shoreline and often occur suddenly. They are scary because they catch you off guard. One minute you’re floating or splashing happily in the surf, the next you’re being dragged out to sea at top speed. They occur in all sorts of weather and on many of Hawaii¹s beaches. Unlike violent, crashing waves, you probably won’t notice a rip current until you’re being whisked away.

A rip current occurs when the receding flow of the ocean becomes concentrated in a particular area. The most common cause of this is a break in a sandbar where the water rushes through at a low point. Rip currents can last for several minutes or hours

Is a “rip tide” the same thing? No. There really is no such thing as a rip tide. Tides are the rising and falling of water levels in the ocean caused mostly by the moon¹s gravitational pull. Tides change gradually and predictably every day.

Is “undertow” the same as a rip current? Rip currents are also not undertow. Undertow is a current of water that pulls you down to the ocean bottom. Rip currents move along the surface of the water, pulling you straight out into the ocean, but not underneath the water’s surface. If you are in shallow water, a rip current could knock you down, and if you thrash around and get disoriented, you may end up being pulled along the ocean bottom. The key is to relax your body and let the current keep you near the surface.

What do you do if you find yourself in a rip current? If you get caught up in a rip current‹don¹t panic. Your first instinct may be to swim against the current back to shallow waters because it¹s the shortest distance. Even a strong swimmer cannot do this will become exhausted. The current is too strong to fight head-on.

Instead, swim sideways, parallel to the beach. This will get you out of the narrow outward current, so you can swim back to shore with the waves helping you. If it’s too hard to swim sideways while you’re being dragged through the water, just wait until the current carries you past the sandbar. The water will become calmer and you can then swim clear of the rip current before heading back in.

Dear Big Kahuna,

We would like to island hop from our base in Honolulu to Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. Are there any companies that provide flights to and tours of the various islands?
Mr. and Mrs. Spoout
Bethesda, Maryland

Aloha Mr. and Mrs. Spoout,

That’s a very good question. In fact, there is a company that can provide all the services you seek. Their pleasant enough name is Pleasant Island Holidays. They can help with air/hotel/car packages between the islands and the day-trip arrangements as well.

There are dozens of activities to choose from on each island, including helicopter tours, snorkeling, scuba diving, and on the Big Island, volcano tours. If you’re looking for something a little less enervating, try a submarine ride, a boating tour, sailing or fishing. You can call in advance to make reservations, or wait until you have arrived in Hawaii.

Pleasant Island Holidays is local in Hawaii and you can reach them toll-free at (800) 654-4386 or get a bit more info at:

Have a great time island hopping and mahalo (thank you) for writing,
Big Kahuna
