On May 2, 2011, The Contemporary Museum ceased to exist as an independent entity. It’s galleries and grounds have remained open to the public. The staff of the former Contemporary Museum joined the staff of the Honolulu Museum of Art. The director of the Contemporary Museum became deputy director of the Honolulu Museum of Art, and its curatorial staff became a new Department of Contemporary Art at the larger museum.
