Back in 1990, I had decided to fulfill a lifetime goal and go to Hawaii. This was prompted by two things. I had started dating a wonderful woman and I became aware of a huge discount at a Maui resort.
At the time, I knew only a little of Hawaii and that dealt with Oahu. My reaction on going to Maui was well, it’s going to be Hawaii, so how bad can it be? I didn’t realize how little I knew because the experience of going to Maui was one of the few times in my life where the anticipation was exceeded by the reality. In addition, our relationship changed to a more serious one during the trip
In a few short days, we managed to cover most of the island from the then washboard, potholed road to Hana to the top of Haleakala. The temptation to try to stay was almost overwhelming. The beauty of the land and the people amaze me.
We couldn’t stay however, so we did the next best thing. We came back to celebrate our honeymoon! And we still return as often as we can.
