Getting Married on the Big Island of Hawaii

If you’re considering an exotic island wedding, the Big Island of Hawaii offers many exquisite wedding settings in honeymoon heaven. Kona and Kohala beaches offer perfect golden sand and glowing sunsets for a simple affair with flower leis and a ukulele playing the Hawaiian Wedding Song.

For a fancier, more formal event, some superb resorts offer romantic wedding and honeymoon packages in stunning settings. Or perhaps you’d like a quaint church wedding at a beachside chapel, or to tie the knot on a sailboat at sunset.

Whether you want a wedding that is intimate, elegant, or outrageous, there’s a place — and a wedding planning service — just for you. Wedding attire, flowers and leis, photography and videography, and the all-important wedding cake. Wedding planners will work within your budget and involve you to the degree chosen.

A wedding in paradise will create memories for a lifetime. Begin your life together on the Big Island — it’s a magical place.

Marriage Licenses

To obtain a marriage license on the Big Island, the bride NO LONGER needs to bring a premarital rubella clearance certificate from a physician. Obtain an application from one of the Marriage License Agents on the island or the Big Island office of the State Health Department.

Both bride and groom must apply in person. The fee is $16; there is no waiting period for getting the license or having the ceremony. Persons 19 years or younger should call the Health Department, at (808) 241-3495, for additional requirements.

The ceremony must be performed by someone licensed by the state; many of the wedding services coordinators are licensed or can refer you to a licensed person. Phone (808) 241-3495, Hawaii State Department of Health, for further information.
