Here’s a spot on the Big Island that even most longtime residents don’t know about – a PUBLIC SALTWATER SWIMMING POOL fed by the splashing of waves.

On Alii Drive, between Kona-By-The-Sea and Kona Isle is a 100-yard access trail that leads you to it. It was privately built decades ago and reverted to the state when the owner died without heirs. The pool directly abuts the ocean and even has some fish in it most of the time. There’s a smaller tide-pool to the left. If you want to swim in seawater but are hesitant to go into the ocean, here’s your chance. Unmaintained, the pool occasionally isn’t refreshed enough if the surf has been flat for too long – meaning it sometimes gets green.

In Hawaii the ocean is our playground, but you still need to take certain precautions. Offshore winds and currents can be powerful and they can change suddenly. If warning signs are posted or if conditions seem chancy, do not stray too far from shore or head out to kayak, windsurf or sail. If you are swimming and the current or riptide begins pulling you out to sea, do not fight it or panic. Instead, simply swim parallel to the shore till the current releases you and then swim into shore.

If you’re hiking into a wilderness, be sure to sign out with park rangers and let someone know when you expect to return.

Few places are as safe as Hawaii, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon all care as you travel about. Lock your car doors and keep valuables out of sight. 911 works here should an emergency arise requiring police assistance.

Dear Big Kahuna,

I have been searching for hours to find information about interisland ferry travel. Does it exist now? I know it did at one time, I even found an articles discussing future sites with large carriers. I am trying to plan some excursions from Maui to Molokai or Lanai.

Also I am trying to plan another (flying) excursion from the Big Island to Kauai and would like to know of a company that specializes in this particular service. It seems like everything on the net is geared toward mainland to HI. Any information/direction/website would be appreciated.

Thank you. Dawn from San Antonio, TX

Aloha Dawn,
As of now there is ferry service, but only between Maui and Lanai, and between Maui and Molokai.

Expeditions has provides 5 daily 90-minute round trips or one way trips on between Maui and Lanai. Passengers can go on deck to take photographs or simply enjoy the views offered by Maui County – the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe, and on a clear day, the Big Island. You may be treated to the grace of flying fish, dolphins, and, in season (January to April) spectacular displays by humpback whales. For more information call (808) 661-3756.

Molokai Ferry makes one daily trip between Maui and Molokai. One way takes about 90 minutes. The trips seem timed more for people commuting to work rather than tourists, as the ferry leaves Molokai at 6 am and the return leaves Maui at 5 pm. For more information about this ferry call 1-(800) 275-6969.

In the 70s we had interisland hydrofoil ferries connecting Honolulu with Maui and the Big Island. Reports are that the ships would sometimes hit objects in the water, and mechanical difficulties would leave passengers wallowing in the channel for hours. Whatever the reason, they are no longer in operation.

For interisland flights, the largest carriers are Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines. For Hawaiian Airlines, go to: Hawaiian Airlines

Flying between islands is by far the most popular choice of interisland transportation. It’s the fastest way to get from one island to another.

Enjoy your visit!
B. K.
