HAULA BEACH

The Mahaulepu Beaches on the South Shore coastline of Kauai make for fantastic exploring and beach walking, but be aware that swimming is hazardous and the seas are choppy. To get to Haula Beach you must first turn right off at the dead end past the Hyatt on Poipu Road. Park and follow the trail that parallels the southern side of a stream. This will take you to Kawailoa Bay. Continuing northeast, the trail to Haula Beach requires a walk along an elevated field of lithified [rocky] sand on a trail beginning at a fence opening where the fence meets the ocean. The constant sea spray has caused the sandstone to erode into short, fantastically sharp and strangely-shaped pinnacles. When you reach Haula Beach after about 15 minutes you will almost certainly have it all to yourself. The swimming isn’t good (read dangerous) but the beach is a beautiful place to enjoy your solitude.

Top Ten Tips on How to Enjoy Your Island Helicopter Ride
There is no better way to see the incomparable beauty and drama of the Hawaiian islands than by helicopter tour. Here are some tips to get the most out of your trip.

1. Never take a flight less than an hour; you will only get your appetite whetted. It’s too rushed.

2. With a still camera, zoom lenses work best since the size of the field changes rapidly.

3. Use fast film–ASA/ISO 200 or 400.

4. Beware of the glare from the inside of the windows, and don’t let your camera touch a vibrating window while shooting. Circular polarizers reduce glare as does dark clothing.

5. Don’t get so caught up taking pictures that you lose the moment. It’s hard to soak up the magic of your flight through a camera viewfinder.

6. If you’re in a craft that has two-way communication, don’t be afraid to ask the pilot to turn so you can take a shot of something. Most will.

7. If there are four or more of you, consider chartering a helicopter. It might be cheaper and will allow you to call many of the shots during the flight.

8. Make your helicopter trip early in your stay. It will help orient you to the island.

9. Morning is usually the best time for flights. Rainy weather brings more waterfalls.

10. When you see people getting off a helicopter after their tour, try not to be downwind from them. They are often foaming at the mouth from their experience and might drool on you.

Dear Big Kahuna,

I would like to take my wife sunbathing/swimming on Kauai along the coast that is not accessible by car.  The last time I was in Kauai we flew over it in a chopper and it was so beautiful.  Any advice where I can find a boat to rent or have someone take us out there for the day?  Would appreciate your input.  After 25 years of marriage, I would like to do something really special.
Regards from cold Pennsylvania,
Brian

Aloha Brian,

I see cold Pennsylvania has not chilled your ardor for your lucky bride of 25 years.

You could charter a boat (or helicopter) to take you to the remote Na Pali coast and drop you off near enough to swim to one of its uninhabited beaches. If you choose this option, visit: “Activities”, then click “On the Water” or “In the Air” for a list of the best boating and helicopter companies available.

However, what few people realize is that many of Kauai’s beaches, even those easily accessible by car, are never crowded. If you add to that the beaches accessible only by foot, I can pretty much guarantee that you will have a beach virtually all to yourself.

Let’s do the math: there are about 1.1 million visitors to Kauai each year or about 3,014 per day on average. If you assume that there are about 60 beaches on Kauai (per The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook
bestbookshawaii.com) with every single one of those people going to the beach, that means about 50 people on a beach each day. With 12 hours of daylight, those 50 people spread out to about 4 people on any beach in any one hour. Now, you know some of those beaches, like the ones in Poipu and Lydgate (Kapaa) and Hanalei Bay are going to be a bigger draw, and some visitors will be doing other things, so inevitably there will be beaches that are nearly deserted.

If you absolutely press me, I’ll suggest Queen’s Bath on the North Shore, Donkey Beach on the East Side, and Polihale on the West Side. But any beach you choose on Kauai could provide that special place for that special moment.

Happy Anniversary,
Big Kahuna
