Kissing might be difficult while sitting in separate kayaks, but be daring – the water is warm and shallow in most places. If you can both swim, the worst that can happen is that you’ll be in the water together. Doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Chances are, especially if you’re beginners like us, you’ll get pretty wet anyhow, so dress accordingly. A word to the wise: Unless you’ve done this together before, we highly recommend that you rent one kayak each rather than sharing a double. Two beginners could spend all day zigzagging up the river… It might be funny at first, but trust us – once your arms are sore, it could get ugly. Unlike other modes of transportation, kayaks can carry couples to an isolated section of paradise… We felt a bit unprepared at this apparent independence, but it truly was as easy as we had been told, and the tranquillity we found on the Hanalei River was sublime. If we hadn’t seen them for ourselves, we wouln’t have believed the many fish jumping out of the water among the brilliant orange hau tree flowers floating on the surface.
