![]() Kapalua, West Maui
Quite literally the end of the road on the westernmost tip of Maui, Kapalua is the last developed place on this side of the island. The West Maui mountains, 23,000 acres of pineapple fields, and a rugged shoreline define this lush, majestic domain.Among Kapalua's virtues are its truly remote, unmarked beaches (all but three are accessed only by substantial hikes); the incredibly scenic drive (somewhat inaccessible without a four-wheel-drive vehicle) from Honokohau to Kahakuloa; and a welcome feeling of relative seclusion. One minor drawback is that this is one of the wettest places on Maui. What that really means are a few more clouds and a couple extra hours of precipitation during the rainy season, but that's about it. Kapalua's only other potential letdown for some travelers is what makes it wonderful for the rest of us: it isn't the place to catch the action on Maui. Instead, you will find serenity, seclusion, and silence, all of which should lead to a more amorous vacation.
