Ask the Big KahunaResponse: Aloha Mike, The Hawaii State Golf Association, (808) 589-2909, lists municipal and public courses on all the islands. Municipal courses are county or city-run courses and have the lowest rates. Public courses are open to the general public and have higher rates than the municipal courses. Military golf courses, such has Hickam Golf Course, are open to the public, but there’s a catch. You can use the course only if you have a sponsor on the base. Probably the most unforgettable course on Oahu is Koolau Golf Club, listed as one of the 10 Best Golf Courses in Hawaii. Carved out of a magnificent tropical forest, Koolau Golf Club is one of the most inspiring golf experiences you will play - anywhere in the world. Koolau, nestled below Oahu's historic and popular Pali Lookout, offers breathtaking views of the majestic 2,000-foot-high cliffs of the Koolau Mountain Range, cascading waterfalls, and commanding views of the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful windward side of Oahu. Due to its gargantuan scale, tropical terrain, and challenging play, freelance golf writer Tom Haynes describes Koolau as "monster jungle golf" (Golf Courses of Hawaii) – in a word: unforgettable. For tee times, visit Koolau Golf Club.
