Love Stories of Hawaii

Second Chance Love

A place of refuge
Dedicated to Pele

Submitted by Lee

Nathan and I are what you would call soul mates…not in the cliché sense. Unknowingly, as kids, we separately used to contemplate where our souls were before they were born. Later we came to the conclusion that our souls must have been in the same pre-birth waiting room because it feels like we have known each other for much longer than 20 years.

However, Nathan was the smart geeky type. I was the homecoming queen and restless type. For as much as he hoped for us, I hoped just as hard against it because true and real love scared me. He was my buddy…my shoulder to cry on. After a few years into college I let him know that he was closer to me than anyone else had ever gotten, but I didn't love him. The truth was that I didn't love me or anyone. We went our separate ways and lived our lives.

Ten precious years slipped by. I was haunted by his memories like a ghost. I realized how deeply I loved him and how I had let the man of my dreams go. Both of our lives took a different turn and we found ourselves at a crossroads that brought us back to each other. With the second chance of a lifetime we married a year later. The geeky little boy had grown into a handsome prince and the scared little girl had discovered how to love. We didn't have the money for a honeymoon, but the following year he had acquired enough frequent flyer miles from work travels to fly us to Hawaii.

We stayed on Big Island and spent a few days around the Place of Refuge. The legend of it was intriguing to us. It is said that if you broke a law of the land your transgression would be wiped clean if you could get there. I hadn't broken a law, but something worse, his heart all those years ago. He put his arms around me and I realized that I was in my own place of refuge. I still dream of the days we spent in paradise…the carefree days and the fragrant air. Most of all I think about the time we spent just playing like kids!

Now we are back on the main land, bombarded with the noise and distractions of everyday life. The spirit of Hawaii is calling us back…the crystal clear waters, majestic sea turtles, rich history and eclectic culture. We went there thinking it would be a once in a lifetime trip, we left promising each other we would find a way to return. It is more than Paradise, it is the ultimate place of refuge.
