Love Stories of Hawaii

Sharing magic and romance
Dedicated to Janeen

Submitted by Larry

My beautiful wife Janeen and I have spent 18 happy years together. We have built our lives around raising our children, working, and volunteering in our community, but we haven't often taken time away together. She has told me, "When a mom goes on a vacation with her children, it isn't a vacation for her." So I decided that for our 18th anniversary, I would take her away to paradise. Together, we planned our perfect dream vacation. I had to work extra hours to pay for the trip, but the extra work was my gift to my sweetheart. I sent her emails from work with pictures of places in Hawaii we would visit. I left her notes reminding her of the things we would do. I bought her a new swimsuit and some clothes for the trip. Finally, the day arrived.

We flew to Hawaii and took a seven-day cruise between the islands. The islands were magical, and our time together was thrilling. We spent hours on the ship's balcony, watching the water, watching the sun rise or set, watching the lights on the islands, watching the moon and the stars, and feeling the wind in our faces. I surprised her by renting a convertible, and we drove along beautiful coasts with the wind in our hair. We spent a whole afternoon on a deserted beach, watching the waves, holding hands, swimming, and even enjoying a warm rain shower.

We visited an amazing black sand beach. We watched green sea turtles just off the beach, dolphins playing in the ship's wake, colorful fish, and even an octopus that turned himself black when we got too close. We hiked to beautiful waterfalls and swam together in the pools below them. We visited the summit of Mauna Kea; the air was so thin we were light-headed, but we saw the giant telescope observatories I had always dreamed of visiting. We rode bicycles down the Haleakala volcano. We snorkeled in warm tropical water. We relaxed in a hot tub in the dark on the bow of the ship while we sailed by orange lava flowing into the ocean. We held each other while staring out into the windy blackness of empty ocean at night.

Of all the wonderful things we did together on that trip, the most amazing for me was sitting on our private balcony watching the Kauai coast as we sailed past the Na Pali cliffs. It wasn't amazing just because the cliffs were unbelievably lush and green, over 4,000 feet tall, with waterfalls falling 1,000 feet or more. The truth is that I had a hard time keeping my eyes on the coast. My gorgeous wife was sitting next to me, her dark hair blowing and her beautiful brown eyes taking in the island. She was soaking in the beauty of the island paradise, and I was basking in her beauty.

We will both always treasure the magic and romance we shared in Hawaii.
