A Little Slice of Heaven
Dedicated to Carly Dianne Wagoner

Submitted by Kevin

We rented a convertible (her idea) and drove around the entire island. We stopped and looked at beaches along the way. Each new stretch of sand offered something beautifully unique from the last. After our sushi and fresh fruit picnic on the north shore, we cruised until we saw signs on the highway for a town called Kailua and decided to take a little side excursion. When we got there we realized this was not a tourist town.

Although the daylight was waning, a handful of kite-surfers, snorkelers, and local sunbathers catching that late-afternoon constitutional kept the beach alive. We enjoyed the sights for a while until someone mentioned the little drive up the hill where some beautiful homes overlooked the bay. We buckled up and took a leisurely cruise into a long quiet cul de sac.

Very nice homes indeed, but they dominated the shore and the view almost exclusively.

Almost.

We noticed a small sign that said "Public Access to Beach" and jumped out of the car. Between two homes was an alleyway that lead down to the water.

There it was. About 30 feet of paradise.

The sand was like silk, the water like sapphire, and the view like a peek into our own personal heaven. This was the most hidden, secluded, and tiny beaches in the entire world. We thought for sure we were the only two people on the planet who knew about it.

"Tourists don't come to Kailua, it's all locals here. And even if they did, they'd never find this cul de sac, only people who live here would drive here. And even if they did, they'd never notice this tiny alley with that tiny sign….Right?"

As we stood ankle-deep in that tropical dreamscape, we looked at each other in a way that we never had before.

We looked at each other.

Knowingly.

Her eyes were a shade I'd never seen them; her skin glowed with the multi-colored sky; her hair blew in the breeze with a slow hypnotizing rhythm. I was falling in love harder than I ever had—all because of the magic of this little slice of heaven.

We drew a heart in the sand, and put our names in it. I found a fallen tree branch with some leaves on it that resembled a flower, and a stray coconut. We decorated the heart and took a picture.

Kevin + Carly.

As I watched the next wave wash half of our symbol away, I dreamt of a day that I might take her back to this place and ask her that once-in-a-lifetime question. No other place on earth is so uniquely ‘ours'. Even if we can't physically make it there for the occasion, I plan on having her close her eyes and remember that moment as I place the stone on her finger and make that everlasting commitment. And no matter where we are, for that moment, our souls will be in Hawaii.
