Maui memories Dedicated to Susan Hardy Submitted by Dinah Our trip to Maui in Hawaii was the first trip my husband and I and our two daughters had taken together in over 18 years. We had planned the trip for three months. We chose a lovely bed & breakfast in Kihei, on the slopes of dormant volcano Haleakula. In the garden at this bed & breakfast, there was a lava flow from several hundred years ago with big lava boulders and a small bridge crossing over the old flow bed. The garden was lined with mango and papaya trees, avacado, macadamia, starfruit, banana, and palm trees as well. The sounds at night were distant drums from the luaus down in Wailua, In the morning, there were sounds of numerous tropical birds who came to find the fruit garden, melodious & sweet. The hostess served warm pineapple muffins and fresh papaya out on the patio for breakfast. The surrounding terrain was beautiful, matched only by the astounding colors of the ocean. I knew we had found our vacation in a true paradise! We journeyed along a narrow road to Kapalua on the north end and Kaanapali beach on the northwest where the tourists go to see the colorful local art.Strolling along Kaanapali beach was amazing, the water was fine to swim and surf in. The next day we drove through the suger cane fields up to Makaweo, a beautiful little town halfway up the volcano. We went to twin falls and drove part way down the road to Hana on the southeast side.We saw the windsurfers at Ho'opia . We only hope to return and explore the beautiful island of Maui further!!
