A relationship in bloom Dedicated to My precious Heather Submitted by JR Heather was my college sweetheart and for a couple years beyond. Over time we grew apart, and eventually split. We met again some years later at an Alumni function and began dating again. In the intervening time we had learned more about who we were and what we needed in a partner, and realized what a wonderful thing we had in each other. We truly fell in love again on a trip to Kauai. After a year of dating, I was sure she was the one for me, and planned to propose during our upcoming vacation in Maui. When we arrived in our hotel room, there was a bouquet of fourteen white roses waiting – one for each year we have known each other. "These flowers represent our past together," I told her, as a white rose was my gift to her on our very first date. The next day, as we were returning from a snorkeling trip, I presented her with a giant red rose. "This represents our present." This was a special rose I had brought in my bag all the way from Boston. You can imagine how nervous I was at the agriculture inspector at the airport, trying to get it approved without her seeing it ! The next night was the big night. As we walked along a moonlight beach in Wailea, I had brought the now-blooming flower along. I told her that roses are like relationships – that careful nurture helps them bloom beautifully, and thoughtfulness helps us avoid the thorns that we know can accompany even the most beautiful roses. "As roses, like relationships, develop, sometimes something truly magical is revealed. This rose is special, for I hope it represents our future together as well." I parted the innermost petals of the rose to reveal the ring I had hidden inside days before. Bent down on one knee in the sand I asked her to be my bride, my light, my love forever. She said yes !!! We plan to be married on "our special beach" in Hawaii next January.
