Love Stories of Hawaii

Special Occasion

Paradise Found
Dedicated to My husband Ryan

Submitted by Myra

I had always heard stories about the beauty of Hawaii, so when I got engaged and my husband asked me where I wanted to go for our honeymoon, it was no surprise that Hawaii was my first choice. Not wanting to let his bride-to-be down, we worked together to come up with an amazing plan for a honeymoon in Hawaii. It was difficult to choose between all of the islands of Hawaii because it seems that each island has something unique and special to offer. We finally decided to spend the first five days on the Big Island and five more in Maui.

Our Wedding was scheduled for September 27, 2003 and everything was going great! We planned everything far in advance to be sure that everything was perfect. Unfortunately, we had an uninvited guest… Hurricane Isabel. She hit about a week before our wedding and rocked Virginia. It was so destructive that over 3 million people lost power. People and businesses went without power for weeks. The basement of our church had been flooded, but luckily had retained power. A few days before the wedding, it had become evident to us that our reception hall wouldn't have power restored. We frantically began searching for another place that had power and could accommodate 300 guests for a reception in a few days. In between changing the reception plans and calling all of the vendors, we worked on removing the tree that Isabel had kindly thrown on our house.

Our wedding pulled together very well at the last minute but, needless to say, we were ready for our honeymoon in Hawaii. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed. For our first night, we sat out on our balcony enjoying champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. We watched the palm trees sway in the moonlight and listened to the sound of the crashing waves of the ocean. It was easy to forget any stress that we had endured. Our ten days in Hawaii were the best days of our lives - it was magical! We drove around the islands, visited waterfalls, took a helicopter ride, observed a lava flow, relaxed on the beach and more. The food was amazing, the scenery was gorgeous, but one of my favorite things was the people. I am convinced that the residents of Hawaii are the nicest people on earth. One day, we snuck into a spot for locals and went to a grocery store. We assumed that once we ventured off the beaten path of tourism that people wouldn't be as friendly. We were wrong, it didn't matter where you went or whom you talked to, the residents of Hawaii would treat you like family.

We re-live our trip to Hawaii all the time through our pictures and memories. I would say that we will remember Hawaii for the rest of our lives, but we won't have to because we are planning on returning for our 5 year anniversary … if we can wait that long!
