An Evening in Paradise Dedicated to Therese Submitted by Dennis The winter sun hangs low in the Pacific Ocean sky casting an elongated reflection over the blue water like a silver carpet from heaven to the golden sand of Haena Beach. We walk hand-in-hand through the late afternoon surf, the warm water breaking over our feet. Bali Hai projects a regal shadow across the island of Kuaui, a final homage to a day of love and adventure exploring this paradise. Sparkles of waves catch my eye to the right of the sun. I turn to see three dolphins suddenly break free of the sea to fly momentarily through the air before returning to their watery home beneath the waves. Stopping, I put my left arm around her shoulder and guide her with my right hand toward the spot where I had seen the dolphins. She makes a soft gasp as the dolphins once again break through the water's surface sailing across the shimmering stream of light to be silhouetted against the glowing red disk of the sun. It is a sight that we will always remember, one of many that will remind us of our vacation in Hawaii. We look at each other after the dolphins once again return to their marine realm. She looks like an island goddess dressed in her flower print wrap with a red hibiscus blossom accenting her auburn hair blowing gently in the ocean breeze. Her eyes reflect the last gleaming sparkles of sunlight, harbingers of the clear starlit skies of the tropical night. My heart leaps like the dolphins that we've just seen as I take in how beautiful she is. She moves closer to me and kisses me lightly on the lips. Her lips taste of the fresh cut pineapple that she brought for the beach picnic that we'll have in the light of the full moon that will soon rise over the palm trees behind us. We hug for an eternal moment, and then turn, cheek-to-cheek, to watch the last rippling layers of a fiery sun as they slowly descend past the edge of our world. The first stars appear, dappling the purplish sky with tiny jewels of diamond, ruby, and gold. We walk through this mystical world of ours. Nothing else exists but the sound of the surf and the feel of wet sand beneath our feet. We are stopped again by another wondrous sight. A veil of white satin drops slowly over the mountain in front of us until the entire beach is enveloped in the romantic light of the moon. The invisible waves are given new life. Effervescent ribbons move toward us out of the darkness beyond to fall prostrate at our feet. We look at each other and almost simultaneously say, "This is the place." We both laugh as she leads me by the hand to find dry sand just beyond the ocean's grasp where we spread our feast to begin our romantic night together.
