Forty Nine Days Dedicated to John Submitted by Jackie I met him on a summer vacation with my parents. The most fantastic vacation we ever took. Hawaii. He was the most handsome man I had ever seen. His beauty was within. We took walks on the beach. He talked about the beauty of life and with each word I fell deeper in love. Then of course our two weeks of heaven were over and parting was such sweet sorrow. We vowed to be together again even though I was so very far from Hawaii. We wrote letters back and forth every day. He was struggling on his own and I was in school in Ohio. I got a job and started saving and counting the days until graduation and back to Hawaii. Forty nine days, I wrote, and I will be at your side. Forty nine days.... oh those words....only an hour after I mailed them, a terrible accident and I would not walk for the rest of my life. My dreams were shattered. I could not bear to be a burden to this lovely person so I quit writing. I received letters for many weeks but I could not answer them. I could not put in words how I felt so I wrote no words. I quit opening the letters. And after a year, I quit getting letters. I could only dream of what could have been. Confined to a wheelchair, I did what I could to take care of myself and I lived a life of normalcy but I never quit dreaming of what might have been. Forty nine days after the sixth anniversary of my accident my doorbell rang and he was standing there. We cried, we talked, and cried, and talked. Then he swept me up in his arms, carried me to his waiting taxi, and took me home to Hawaii and to his heart.
