Wedding

I Do
Dedicated to my husband, Michael

Submitted by Jennifer

Our wedding was scheduled for Nov. 22nd. Like so many others, it was upset by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. My husband is in the military, and we were stationed at north Georgia at the time. Everything was so uncertain. He was undeployable, but if the Army needed him they would deploy him. Before the attacks it wasn't a problem for me to get on post. Afterwards, if you were not a spouse or family member you were out of the loop. I understood the military's need for safety, but it left me broken hearted to know if something happened, I would not be the first to be notified. We decided to elope that weekend. I went to Wal-mart and bought temporary silver wedding bands. I researched on the internet the most cost effective place to wed. Other than money, the BIG obstacle was that we didn't have a blood test and couldn't get one by Saturday. I decided on Pigeon Forge, TN. It was reasonable, full of chapels in the mountains, and no blood test was required. We left early morning Sept. 15, was married that afternoon, then drove right back because my husband had to work a 27 hour shift starting 6 a.m. Sunday. To this day, our parents and friends do not know about the secret wedding in the mountains. We fear they would have been hurt, although I am sure, understanding. We kept our original wedding date and were married "properly." Unfortunately, we ran into some difficulties with the family wedding. The flowers were wrong, the pamphlet had misspellings, the D.J.s were shady and the photographers turned out to be con men. The photographers took all our money and ran. To this day, we don't have one picure of the two of us together on our wedding day. I would like to surprise my wonderful husband with a trip to Hawaii and a wedding on the beach. We could renew our vows with our family and friends, and of course our 2 year old daughter. I have always wanted to do something special for him, since he is so special to me. I love him with all of my heart.
