On The Airwaves Dedicated to My dear Mom Submitted by Lenore Radio reception in my home city of Edmonton was an adventure in the winter during my growing years. Signals came in from distant places. One could often access Denver, Vancouver and sometimes Texas on a good night. You never knew! A favourite program of mine bounced from Vancouver was Hawaii Calls, broadcast on Sunday nights from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and seemingly reaching the far corners of the world. In the frigid winters of Edmonton I would tune in from the first moment and listen intently to the waves crashing on the beach as the show continued. The announcer had the ability to make me feel I was there, under the banyan tree listening to the rhythm of the drums. I always envisioned myself as sometime seeing the sights of Hawaii for myself. Friends went, my Mother and Father went and then, after my Dad had gone, Mother went again with a sister and cousin. They returned with photos, tales, movies and tans, full of excitement and recommendations. Mom & Dad toured the Pearl Harbour Memorial and came home somewhat shaken by the display. We went to a post-holiday dinner offered by the travel agency that planned their trip and dined on Hawaiian fare to the music of Don Ho. This, as you might surmise, was a number of years ago. The memories I have of a trip taken second-hand, remain Time has passed, my children have grown, friends continue to visit Hawaii for winter vacations and I have yet to make the journey!
