Summer Romance

A Summer Forever Etched in My Mind
Dedicated to The summer of '2002

Submitted by Elizabeth

"Now boarding flight 727 Honolulu to Detroit. Rows thirty to thirty-four you are now welcome to board, rows thirty to thirty-four." That was our call. Jackie, Chrissy, and I gathered our bags overflowing with puka shells, postcards, lei's, and unforgettable memories. Wiping away tears from our eyes and smelling the sweet smell of hyacinths throughout the airport, we headed towards the gate.

Now, on the plane, I lie back in my seat, let the sound of Celine Dion fill my earphones, closed my eyes, and drifted into reminiscing.

I was back at the beginning of our trip. The three of us had decided to spend our summer in Waikiki together before we all went our separate ways to college. After being lost in the city for an hour we finally came across out apartment. We unlocked the door, finding two twin beds, and a three and a half foot refrigerator with left over food jammed all along the inside. The cupboards were bare and the blinds were broken, but this was our trip, we were in Hawaii, and a little bit of dirt wasn't going to stop us from having the time of our lives.

We switched into itty-bitty bikinis and headed for the shore. The sand and ocean were cluttered with bodies. We found a spot, and lay there soaking up the warmth. All of a sudden a cast of darkness covered the sunrays beating down on us. We opened our eyes to meet Ryan, Wayne, and Shawn, the three guys we would be spending the next month with. All afternoon we spent splashing in the waves and getting to know one another.

We had spent every day and night with the guys. Days were spent at various beaches dotted along the shoreline of Oahu. Nights, too, were shared. Everyday and night was different. There was so much to do on the island: rock jumping, discovering hidden waterfalls, and site seeing were some of my favorites. The six of us were an inseparable group, creating memories that would be etched in our minds for the rest of our lives.

The last night together with our guys was the worst. We knew it would be the last time we would be able to fall asleep in their arms. It was unpleasant to consider, but we knew the next day we would be separated my 5,000 miles of loneliness. The guys took us to the airport, where we all talked over a couple of burgers from Jack in The Box. These were our last few moments together. Just minutes before it was time to board our flight we had to do the hardest thing I've ever had to do; say goodbye to people and a place I fell in love with. We held onto one another not wanting to let go of paradise. We cried, and so did they and then headed for our plane.

Everyone has a summer that has stamped his or her lives. I had just lived mine.
