Beauty in every morning Dedicated to My loving husband, Steve Submitted by Krista Before we left for our honeymoon in Hawaii, my husband said, "Pack one pair of boots, heavy pants, gloves, and your leather jacket." "Along with my bikinis and sundresses?" I responded. "Trust me, we're going to need it for a sunrise trip to a volcano." I packed the winter things along with the summer things, trying to envision wearing a leather jacket and gloves in tropical paradise. Two days into our happy honeymoon, we left our hotel room at two o'clock in the morning. How funny we must have looked with heavy coats in hand to the giddy people coming in from partying into the night. We were the first ones on the bus. The bus driver was in a great mood, we were still half asleep. He happily chatted about life in Maui as we stopped at different hotels picking up other groggy tourists. As we ascended the mountain, it was very foggy. It was getting pretty steep, we were all silently hoping the bus driver knew the route by heart. When we reached the top, it was pitch black, windy and cold-freezing cold, despite all of our layers. We snuggled together, and huddled together with tourists from around the world, eagerly awaiting the sunrise. Not many people experience the joy of seeing sunrises, and especially not over a volcano. It's something you must experience at least once in your lifetime: The sun slowly came up over the horizon. It was majestic. You could feel the air warm slightly, and the feeling of hope and beauty as a new day started in Hawaii, full of possibilities. The appreciative crowd instinctively uttered "oohs and ahhs"; you couldn't help but rejoice in the view that was unfolding before us and changing every second. My new husband and I felt so full of life, so thrilled to experience such splendor, we embraced each other and held on tightly for a long time. When I reflect on that now, six years later, I see us on top of the world, hugging among the clouds, feeling both humbled to have experienced something so grand, and triumphant in celebrating our new life together, it warms my heart. It makes me remember there are things larger than us, more important than our problems, and every day, the sun will rise and a new day will begin with refreshed hope and opportunities.
