Why I am at Home in Hawaii
Dedicated to My Family

Submitted by Mary

My first vist to Hawaii occurred several years ago when I went to Hawaii for an interview. As soon as I landed at the airport, I felt so at home for the very first time in my life. I have never felt "at home" anywhere because our family had moved around alot and I was of mixed asian and causasian heritage. Being of mixed race, I never felt like I fit into either the Asian or white culture...and I was not accepted as such by either cultures. Many times, people ask me what race I am, and at times, I have to admit, it makes me uncomfortable because it makes me feel like I don't fit in. When I visited Hawaii, I felt like I somehow fit in. I took a walk to the local convenience store and found spam with rice and chili over rice for sale. I thought, wow, people in Hawaii eat like I do! As strange as this sounds, this made me feel at home. I also felt at home when locals commented that I looked like I was from a certain part of Hawaii where there were many mixed race they just assumed that I was a local also...except for when I spoke. No one asked me what my race was and this made me feel comfortable and gave me a sense of belonging.

I find that Hawaii is a place where the East and West have I am blended. In my opinion, Hawaii is the closest place in the world where most everyone accepts people as they are and not what race they are. Because of this, I have fallen in love with Hawaii and it is my goal to retire there and visit as often as possible.
