Secret Love

A girl and her Island.
Dedicated to Every kid with a dream

Submitted by Jonene

When you think of a love story what comes to mind? A man and woman in eachothers arms under the moonlight? A mother holding her newborn child? What about an island? Can you write a "Love" story about a peice of land? Well, I can! My name is Jonene.. and this is my story.

When I was five years old my family went to a local Luau. I had never seen anything like it before. The hula dancers, the drummers, THE FOOD! It was there that I got my first taste of the aloha spirit. At the end of the night the drums started up and the dancers went up on stage one last time. One of the dancers came up to my table and took me by the hand. She put a beautiful fragrant lei around my neck and walked me to the stage to dance with her. I tried my best to make my chubby little hips mimick hers, but when I couldn't seem to get the hang of it she bent down and whispered something to me in Hawaiian. I had no clue what she said but it was the most beautiful language I had ever heard! Although Im sure her Hawaiian advice didn't affect my hula skills it made me feel like a pro!

From then on I have just felt Drawn to Hawaii and the Hawaiian culture. It isn't something that I can really even explain. It is however a love. A love for sandy beaches and tropical winds. A love for ocean mist against my sunkissed skin. A love for a beautiful language and an ancient culture. A love for Aloha. A love for Hawaii!
