Kauai Kindness
Dedicated to My Friends and Family

Submitted by Collette

The year was 1999. The destination: Kauai. My son, Cody, and I were looking forward to our first visit to the Garden Isle staying at my friend's Poipu condo. Since we were leaving from San Francisco the morning after Mother's Day, I invited my mom to a Mother's Day dinner at our hotel. With no purse really necessary for me, I asked my mom to keep my wallet in her purse. Dinner was lovely, much wine was imbibed, and Cody and I slept well knowing the next day we'd be starting our Polynesian Paralysis Vacation. We woke up before the sun rose for our early morning flight, and headed to the airport in the hotel shuttle. Much to my surprise, I was unable to find my wallet when checking our luggage. I searched my backpack, but then remembered- Mom's purse! First I tried calling her, but at that early hour I knew she was still sound asleep. She lives about an hour away, and we would have missed our flight even if she was to immediately return with my wallet. With a determination stronger than the Hawaiian sun, I went in to the airline clerk as suggested by the luggage checkers. I explained my pathetic situation with my 8 year old son by my side- I only had the airline tickets- No driver's license/ID or money. Bless her soul, she quietly checked us in. Our first obstacle had been removed, and I wasn't stopping until I was on Poipu Beach. Of course, we had no money for drinks or a movie on the plane, but that wasn't really an issue. My next goal was getting past the clerk in Honolulu to board our plane to Kauai. Miraculously, we did it. Of course, all this would surely not be possible in 2003 because of the tragedy of 9/11. During our stopover in Honolulu, I finally got through to my mom and explained what happened. She was amazed we had gotten that far, and at that moment, working on getting my money and ID to me in Kauai as soon as possible. My next problem was picking up our rental car with no driver's license. Once we landed in Kauai, I contacted my mom again, and she had spoken with my friend whose condo we were staying at. My friend had contacted her realtor in Kauai, who was kind enough to agree to pick us up at the airport. Sure enough, there he was- right on time. He rented our car with his driver's license and gave us a few hundred dollars to spend until my money arrived. What an angel! By the time we arrived at the condo, I was absolutely exhausted, but amazed at the kindness and generosity of everyone involved in that situation that could have been a complete disappointment for both me and my son. Of course, my ID and money arrived within a couple days, and I was able to meet my "angel realtor" again to repay him in both money and mahalo!
