Coming Home Dedicated to Joan Submitted by Norm It was not until I was 40 that a friend convinced me to trek to Hawaii, a place which seemed so distant and exotic, though a part of the good ol' USofA. Being Japanese American and knowing of Hawaii's diverse cultural heritage, one might have thought I'd have already visited, but being the homebody that I am, I just hadn't gotten around to it. But a good friend suggested that we give it a try, so off we went. From the moment I stepped off the plane and walked through the breezeway at the airport, I could feel the trade winds work their magic, caressing my skin with a balmy, tender touch. I could sense the welcoming smiles on friendly faces, the eager anticipation of fellow visitors. Once settled I was off on an adventure in Paradise, sight seeing, shopping, eating, activities galore, relaxing under the most beautiful of tropical nights. But most of all it is the people of Hawaii and their Aloha spirit which ignites such passion for this small speck of land in the vast Pacific. Here so many cultures have grown to live together, to share and learn from each other. Often when in the islands, I imagine myself and those around me, living in the most isolated spot on earth, yet Hawaii has fashioned for itself a model for human cooperation, a place where people live together, welcome visitors and are at peace with the wondrous nature which surrounds and supports them. When friends or family wonder why I so often visit the islands, I can only tell them that there are few places on earth which have the magic which can alter your view on this life. Hawaii is such a place. Although I am an annual visitor to Hawaii, it always feels like I'm coming home.
