Mr. Romance
Dedicated to My wonderful husband Anthony

Submitted by Sandy

As I was sitting blindfolded in the San Francisco Airport, my words came back to haunt me. Just as my husband, Anthony, said they would. Last Feb 14th I planned to surprise my husband with a romantic valentine evening. The night was to include no kids, a clean house, a bottle of our favorite and very expensive champagne, Chicken Fettuccini with an Alfredo sauce and blackberry cobbler for dessert. Anthony had been busy with a job assignment and it wasn?t unusual for him to end up working into the evening, I thought this wouldn?t be a problem, after all it was Valentines day. Ha! Around seven o?clock I finally called him and found that he was working late. Upset, I yelled that I couldn?t believe he forgot about Valentines Day, accused him of being as romantic as a Neanderthal and then I hung up. Later that night, he showed up with a bouquet of flowers and apologized. He promised that someday I would take back the Neanderthal comment.

Those events are what bring me to sitting in the San Francisco Airport, blindfolded. Anthony had surprised me with a Valentine getaway. As we headed towards the departure gate he gave me a Walkman and said I was to listen to music so that I couldn?t hear departing cities. I couldn?t stop smiling when I turned on the tape to hear some of our favorite songs we had shared over the years.

I was giddy with expectation when we finally boarded the plane. Blindfold still in place, I walked up the ramp with Anthony guiding me. Once seated, Anthony reached over and turned the Walkman off. Next, he planted a big kiss on my lips and then took the blindfold off. He was beaming with excitement when he handed me small velvet box. I opened it to find a beautiful necklace that had golden flowers all the way around it, resembling a Lai. As he put it around my neck he said ?Aloha??

That is when I realized that we were heading to Hawaii! Anthony gave me a book filled with places to see on the Exotic Island of Kauai. He told me that this was to be the best trip of my life and I had the next five hours to start picking the places I wanted to see. Anthony was good to his word, it was the best trip of my life. We hiked the trail at the North end of the island. At the end of that breath taking hike, filled with spectacular views, was our very own deserted waterfall. On another day we drove down a dirt trail that seemed to lead to nowhere, but actually lead to 7 mile beach. We relaxed in seclusion and watch the sun set. We had many adventures on our trip and by the end of it my husband had earned a new nickname that he can never live down, I call him: Mr. Romance.
