Aloha Lei
Dedicated to Debby

Submitted by Craig

"ALOHA LEI"
(a special memory dedicated to my wife Debby)

My story begins in March 2001. My wife and I had never been able to afford the time (or money) to take a honeymoon. We saved and saved and for our 5th wedding anniversary, we planned a trip to Hawaii. I had never seen the ocean before and we both love the sun. The pictures in our minds of swaying palm trees and tropical flowers were filling our hearts with excitement. The much anticipated time to leave was upon us...........our plane was due to leave Oklahoma City at 6:30 AM, thus we had to leave rather early from our home (3:00 AM). For some reason, at the last minute as we were loading the last of the bags, I noticed an old (sentimental to me) ankle bracelet that my wife had bought me when we were dating, laying on my dresser..........I didn't pack it originally, but picked it up and put into my pocket for the 4,000 mile trip to Waikiki Beach. It was a long day of traveling, exciting just the same.

We arrived in Honolulu at 6:30 PM and immediately decided that Honolulu must be the most aromatic big city in the world! We checked into our hotel and began to freshen up and head straight to the ocean. After all, I had never seen an ocean and the South Pacific is one of the most beautiful in the world. As I was changing, the ankle bracelet fell out of my pocket and I put it on. .......we walked hand-in-hand, very much in love, along Waikiki Beach for what seemed to be hours.

We enjoyed many of the beautiful sights of Hawaii for the five days we were there. My ankle bracelet never left my body the entire time.

Our last evening on the island, I asked my wife to grab the leis they gave us upon arrival (they were fragrantly hanging on our bedpost). I wanted to take one last stroll on the beach and it was almost sunset. What she didn't know was that the clasp on my special ankle bracelet that was so sentimental to me had broken earlier in the day and it didn't appear repairable. Debby grabbed the leis and we headed out for our last walk down Waikiki Beach in time to see the sunset. It was the most beautiful sunset that I have ever seen and one of the most romantic places in the world. We were strolling along when she (Debby) asked me why I wanted to bring our leis along.........I reached into my pocket and showed her the ankle bracelet and how badly the clasp was broken/worn-out. I explained to her that our hearts were tied together years ago when she gave me the bracelet and how I wanted them to be tied together forever. We tied the leis together with the broken bracelet and through them in to ocean to float off and be together forever, followed by a long passionate kiss. A memory that I will never forget.
