Love at Ka Lae
Dedicated to Anne, Sarah and Emma

Submitted by Michael

In 1983 at the ripened age of eleven, my parents took me on my first visit to the islands of Hawaii. Spell bound by each island's individual beauty and spirit of aloha, I was never more in awe than while standing on the Big Island's southernmost point, Ka Lae. With the looming presence of Mauna Kea behind me, the powerful swells of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the lava crusted point before me, and the presence of an ancient Hawaiian Heiau at my side, I had never felt more content at any other place in my young life. It was here I promised myself that in my future I would someday share this place with my future wife, a promise made at age eleven.

Seventeen years later I made well on my self-fulfilling promise. It was August 2000 when I brought to Ka Lae my wife, and true love Anne, and our newborn Sarah. Anne and I had met and fallen in love with one another's hearts. Early in our courtship she knew of my love for the islands of Hawaii, and shortly before we were married I told her of my earlier promise to someday share that southernmost point with my future wife. After the gift of Sarah to our lives, we decided that then, while Anne was ending maternity leave, would be the time to introduce my love to this place that had enchanted me for so long.

Just as I was returning to Hawaii once more, Anne was for the first time discovering this place. In her heart a love for the islands was blooming like that of the precious tropical flowers that fill the sweet air with their aroma there. As we made our travels through the islands, this hold on her was growing to equal that which I had felt and carried with me from years before. On the fateful day that we drove from Kona to the southern end of the island I felt as though destiny was watching over both of us, our love for one another, and our new baby girl.

We easily found the gravel road that would lead us to fulfill my wish. As we traveled down the road, Anne was discovering the beauty I had remembered in that place as each mile passed. It was at the end of that journey our wedding would be complete. When I stopped the car Anne scurried from the restraining interior, and stepped right into my fateful dream. Our lungs took in the fresh Pacific air. Behind us the volcano loomed in its' overbearing beauty. Before us the majesty of the ocean played against that lava point known as Ka Lae.

Anne and I looked into one another's eyes, standing in this magnificent place and holding our newborn baby girl between us, we sealed our love once more in the simple words of "I love you." It was at that point in time, at that place in our hearts, a promise was fulfilled.
