Summer Romance

When You Wish Upon A Star
Dedicated to Sue

Submitted by Todd

They first met in a youth group over 21 years ago. She felt the attraction toward him but it wasn't until three years later that he noticed her. In the summer of 1982 the connection was finally made. Sue, 17, and Todd, 18, both too young for true love but yet they couldn't deny it's force. It was a typical summer youth group trip requiring a long car ride to a national tourist attraction. This year the trip would be to Silver Dollar City Amusement Park near Branson, Missouri.

Sue was enjoying the hot day riding the many roller coasters with her friends. She had tried to let Todd know of her interest in him many times before, but now had almost given up. Today was to be different. Several got in line to again ride the "Water Log Lume", just a standard ride you will find at every amusement park. This time, Todd was trying to get into position so that he would be near Sue, hoping they could be in the same log. Noticing he was near her, Sue repositioned her place in line, also hoping they could ride together. Then it happened, the ride attendant asked for the next two to get into the log. Sue's heart leaped as she and Todd got into the front seats of the log. She didn't know it, but Todd's heart was beating even faster. Time seemed to stand still as both enjoyed this special time. The ride ended, they got out and returned to the group of friends. Neither of them realizing how much the other cherished the brief time together.

Later that day, the group met to leave the amusement park. Friends were splitting up into smaller groups to pile into the cars. Sue looked around and from across the parking lot, there he was, looking at her. Was it true? Todd was motioning for her to come over and ride in the car he was getting into. Sue looked to both sides to see if it was somebody else that Todd was beckoning. It wasn't! She smiled as they both climbed into the car, their hearts beating fast. As the sun set, and the stars came out, Todd reached over and took Sue's hand. They rode for miles holding hands when Todd looked out the window and saw a bright star fall from the sky. Remembering that wishes sometimes do come true, he quickly wished that God would allow him to one day marry Sue.

We were married on September 14, 1985, and have spent our lives loving each other. This year we will be celebrating our 15th anniversary. It seems like only yesterday we were in the Ozarks taking that first step into the log ride. Now we would love to take that first step on a beach in Hawaii and 'Wish upon the stars again'.
