A Chance Meeting
Dedicated to My Husband
Submitted by Cyndy
As Sheila wiped down the bar, she thought to her, "if it wasn't for that damned rental in the backroom, I could be on my way home now." She worked for a VFW Club, on the island of Hawaii. On weekends they would rent out the back hall. Most of the night you spent pouring pitchers for the same faceless shirts.
Sheila was in her late thirties, pretty, smart, and had a great personality. She was happy for the most part. It was when she went to bed at night alone and woke up the same way that she knew a big part of her life was missing. She was looking for the one that would make all her dreams come true, and she'd know him by his look, his smile, and the first sentence he'd say to her.
A man wearing a blue shirt came in then, she moved toward him, never lifting her gaze, and inquired, "Hi. How are you?" His reply caught her attention immediately. "Fair to midland, kicking but not high!". Her eyes took him in slowly at first; the dimples around the lips were the first things she noticed. A nice, Romanesque nose followed, and then came the green, smiling eyes. She found herself smiling uncontrollably, as she asked what he was drinking. He ordered a beer and said, "You're not going to believe this, but I'm here meeting somebody on a blind date." He took a few sips, chatted a moment, left a $5 bill on the bar and said, "I'll probably be back".
Sheila turned to her friends and said, "I'm going to marry that man!" As Sheila talked about him with her friends, she heard the DJ in the backroom announce that this was the last song of the night. She was desperate and turned to her friends, "What am I going to do?" Keith suggested writing him a note, which he would even go back and give to him. She scribbled hurriedly, "If things don't work out, I'm here till 1:00AM. Here's my number " She folded it and was about to hand it to Keith when blue shirt came into the bar. She quickly stuffed the note into her pocket.
He walked around to the other side of the bar, sat down and ordered a beer. Sheila eventually sat down next to this man, whose name turned out to be Danny. Within the next 30 minutes they had shared their life histories and found that they shared the same interests, hopes and dreams. They laughed, they smiled, and the electricity surged through them both. Danny leaned down to kiss Sheila, a soft, tender, perfect kiss. He looked deep into her eyes and asked, " Do you believe in love at first sight? ". She thought for a moment, then reached into her pocket and pulled out the note and handed it to him.
And they lived happily ever after ..
