Love Stories of Hawaii

Soul Mate
Dedicated to Joe

Submitted by Mary

Joe and I have known each other all our lives, since we are from the same small village. We hardly ever talked to each other, as we were from "two different worlds." And I thought my family wouldn't approve.

We started seeing each other in the Fall of 1989, after the oil spill clean-up of the Exxon Valdez (which we both worked on). To make a long story short, we fell in love with each other, and have been together ever since. We both didn't want marriage, as we were both burned before. Then in 1998, we were sitting down alone together and, out of the blue, we both decided we wanted to marry each other. We settled on January 24, 1999 as a wedding date, my deceased mother's birthday (which only gave us 4 months to prepare).

That date for the church, being a Sunday, was not available, since there were the usual Sunday services, so I felt pretty let down about it. The reverend called me back and said that for that Sunday only, they had it available, because the service that was supposed to be there, was scheduled for Saturday, instead. Praise the Lord, I thought.

Well, being January in Seattle, we were supposed to be getting a load of snow that day, and I thought we wouldn't even make it to the church, much less the guests ( we didn't expect many). We woke up that day, and the sun was shining down on us, with all its glory. When we got to the church, there were so many of our family and friends from Alaska that the church was filled. Everything went without a "hitch."

I believe the Lord truly blessed us on our special day, and also my mom smiled down on us, as we shared our special day with her on her birthday. I fall in love with Joe, more and more every day, and am so happy to be his wife. He is my true soul mate.
