"Hawaiian" Pizzeria
Dedicated to My Husband

Submitted by Annmarie

The most memorable evening that my boyfriend and I ever spent was in "Hawai'i". When we first got together, all we ever spoke about was that when we got married, we were going to Hawai'i. We were still in college and not even engaged yet, so our trip was way, way in the future. In 1995-1996, New York was hit with endless amounts of snow and ice and it seemed that the winter would never end. I was crabby and suffering from an extreme case of cabin fever when my boyfriend picked me up one night to go out. We didn't have any set plans, so I did not dress to impress, and since it was 10 below, I had tons of clothes on. When we got in the car, he told me he had a surprise for me and told me to close my eyes. I had no idea what this was about, but it sounded exciting. After about a 40-minute drive, he helped me get out of the car and he told me to wait a second while I heard him open a door. He came back for me and helped me walk through the door. As soon as I stepped into the room, a blast of hot air hit me in the face, it was extremely hot in this place! He helped me take off my jacket and then told me to open my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I saw that we were in my boyfriend's pizzeria, but for tonight it was no ordinary pizzeria. To rid me of my winter blues, my boyfriend decided to take me to "Hawai'i". I looked around in amazement. The heat was coming from the pizza ovens, all 4 were open and cranking out heat. I saw he had borrowed cardboard palm trees from the travel agent next door and set them up by the table I usually sat at. There were 2 coconuts on the table with little umbrellas in them and they contained delicious Mai Tai's. At that point, I noticed that my boyfriend had taken off his jacket and was wearing a Hawaiian shirt. He smiled and held out a package to me. I opened it and saw that it was a new bathing suit... and a grass skirt! Since I was dying from the heat, I did not mind changing into it. When I returned, Don Ho was playing softly in the background and my boyfriend had set up tiki torches around the table for a nice romantic atmosphere. So there we sat, the two of us eating poi, (I don't even know where he found it) and sweet pineapple in "Hawai'i", while the weather outside was sub-zero. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.
