Scented Memories Dedicated to my husband, Tatsuo Submitted by Irene In 1973, I met my future husband while working a temporary position before transferring colleges from Montana to New York. For me, it was love at first sight. It took him a little longer. By the time he returned to Japan in August 1974, I was hoping that I'd get the phone call that he spoke to his mother and we'd be getting married. In October, I got my phone call, but also his promise to her that we'd wait one year to "be sure". One year later, after hundreds of letters, we planned to meet half-way in Hawaii and get married. We were both tired and jet-lagged after our long flights and hardly recognized each other. But once we stepped out into the soft Hawaiian air, scented with flowers and the sea, we looked at each other and knew we were doing the right thing. We were married on October 24, 1975 in Honolulu, Hawaii with only my mother as witness from our families. We've been back to Hawaii four times since then. Always, the first breath of soft perfumed air reminds us of our wedding and the beginning of our lives together. This year we're hoping to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in the only place possible, the place where it began, Hawaii.
