Decisions, Decisions, Decisions Dedicated to my wonderful husband, Jim Submitted by Sharry I was not as certain about our relationship as he was. He knew I was the one from our first date, but I didn't. The proposal didn't really surprise me, since we had been living together for a little over a month. He didn't want to wait. "Two can live as cheaply as one and the tax consequences are better if we get married before the end of the year," he said. Not very romantic, I thought, but realistic and stable and convenient. I brought two sons to this relationship and he was paying support for a daughter and his 82-year old mother was living with him, so a big wedding was out of the question. I convinced him to wait until Valentine's Day to be married. I worked for the county courthouse and I knew the judge set aside Valentine's Day for marriages. I arranged everything. I wrote the wedding invitations with calligraphy. I made the red rose flower arrangements and boutonnieres from the FFA Flower Sale Fundraiser. I baked and decorated the heart shaped two-tier red velvet cake for the reception and one single layer for the judge to share with his office staff as a thank you. (No money allowed.) While the cake was cooling, his mom cut and ate a piece of wedding cake, so I had to start all over again. My husband-to-be left for the courthouse with his brother. I drove separately with two of the children. I had to turn around and go back to the house. I forgot the Judges cake, causing me to be late for my own wedding. The judge asked my husband-to-be if I had changed my mind. I cried through the ceremony. Did I have reservations? You bet I did, but so did he, reservations in Hawaii at the Pineapple Park Bed & Breakfast on the Big Island. The money I saved on the wedding was spent on the honeymoon. Did everything go smoothly after that? Not really. The wedding pictures were double exposed and the honeymoon pictures were ruined also, when the exposed film fell from my purse into the toilet at the airport. Automatic flusher. Need I say more? I am sure now that I made the right decision after 7 years of marriage. But how did he know right from the beginning?
