"Great Expectations"
Dedicated to David Harmer

Submitted by Heidi

Ever wonder what it would be like to join a video dating service? Well, I always did and was curious enough to check it out. And so our story goes... I heard of Great Expectations (GE), a dating service, but in my wildest dreams, I never thought I would ever join such a place. When they contacted me for the third or fourth time, I decided to see what it was all about. Upon arriving, I was amazed to find a library adorned by many pictures of "successful couples" who had met through the service and married. I had my doubts. I thought for sure these were actors, not real people. It took some convincing on my part, but I opted to join for seven months. I thought if I couldn't meet someone by then, it would never work. I was on my way to meeting Mr. Right. Thereafter, I plugged away several times a week, flipping through books and videos to find my dream guy. They came in all sizes, shapes and varieties with assorted backgrounds. I was relieved to find that if I were "picked" by someone, I could reject them without a face-to-face meeting. Since men ranging from 60 to70 and sometimes in their early 30s "picked" me, this came in handy as I was looking for someone close to my age, 44, at that time. Alas, I checked the "D" book and came up with David Harmer, a 43-year-old handsome father of two. I immediately liked his picture and decided from reading his bio that I would "pick" him. I never did view his video until months after we started dating. I guess I felt comfortable in the way he described his life-style and devotion to his children and his work as a dental-office designer. His rugged good looks didn't hurt either. About two weeks later, I received a call from David and we chatted for at least an hour. He had just come off a 17-year marriage and we seemed to have a lot in common. We decided to meet for dinner that week. After rummaging through my closet, I finally picked something black, which seemed appropriate after the many disappointing dates I had had. I just knew there'd be something wrong with this guy! Much to my surprise, David and I really hit it off from the start. We exchanged nightmare stories about our GE dates, from women taking notes while they "interviewed" him, to men talking for hours about their ex-wives. To make a long story short, David and I got married on January 30, 1999. We never did go for that free picture from GE to add to their collection on the wall, but now I know the stories are true. As we get ready to celebrate our first anniversary next weekend, I couldn't think of a more romantic place to renew our vows, especially in light of Valentine's Day!
