Beginnings at Sunset Dedicated to Submitted by Tracy As I sat on the beach, listening to the waves lap at the shore, I watched another sunset light up the sky with shades of pink, orange and purple. It had been ten years since I had sat on this very same beach, watching my very first Hawaiian sunset. That vacation had been a turning point in my life. Matthew and I had been the best of friends. In fact, a group of seven of us had remained friends since high school and we vacationed together many times. But this one was different. We had been sightseeing all day and the others were tired. Matthew and I decided to go to dinner alone, and suddenly I was so nervous! What was the big deal anyway? Matthew and I had eaten together countless times before. We ate at a waterside table with the sound of the gentle waves a background to our meal of fresh seafood. Halfway through the meal, Matthew bought me the most fragrant lei from the flower lady circulating through the restaurant. I was more nervous than ever. I could feel the dynamics of our relationship changing, but I couldn't recall when the change had even begun. After dinner, Matthew held my hand and we walked along the beach as the sun began to set. We sat down, just as I was sitting here on the very same beach, and watched as the last slivers of color turned to darkness. We took our time strolling back through the moonlight, and when we arrived back at the hotel, our friends were having a raucous game of poker. That's when I realized it had been a set-up. They had claimed to be tired so that Matthew and I could go out alone. It appeared they all knew what I was only just realizing, that Matthew and I were perfect for each other. And our friendship gave us the perfect foundation on which to build a relationship. We came back to Hawaii for a wonderful honeymoon, and this year we had brought our two children with us to enjoy the magic of a Hawaiian paradise. And to share in celebrating the anniversary of the beginning of our lifetime together.
