Her Birthday
Dedicated to Kevin & His Mom

Submitted by Kerry

It was August 27, 2000. She would have been 56. She had passed away one year, one month and nine days ago. But it still felt like yesterday. This was our first vacation since the funeral. He was doing okay, considering.

Linda held a very special part of my heart. She was his mom. She would have been my mother-in-law.

We were in Aruba on August 27, 2000. Celebrating her birthday was going to be difficult. Last year we went to the grave and cried. This year we were hundreds of miles away and surrounded by happiness. But, it hurt the same.

He seemed a bit fidgety, I thought it was the day, the date. We were out on the balcony, just after midnight on August 27. We started talking and I started to get upset. I just wanted to give her a birthday present, like I had done so many times before. So did he. He knew the one thing she really wanted, what she had been waiting for.

Before I knew it, he was down on one knee giving his Mom a very special birthday present ... her first daughter-in-law! I was overcome with emotions, what a moment in my life. A moment I will never forget ... and the first words out of my mouth (after YES!) were “We're going to HAWAII!!!”

We were in paradise for our engagement, how do you top that? I can tell you “we're going to heaven for our honeymoon!”
